To go along with some of these kinds of education thought, please consider the Nov 2009 Bracey Report On the Condition of Public Education, Graduate School Education,Arizona State University

http://epicpolicy.org/files/BRACEY-2009.pdf

He tackles these assumptions in the paper:

1. High-quality schools can eliminate the achievement gap between
whites and minorities.
2. Mayoral control of public schools is an improvement over the more
common elected board governance systems.
3. Higher standards will improve the performance of public schools.

I see so many crossover points in Bracey and some of the writings by your group effort in this blog.

Ms. Gillard mentioned six figure incomes for teachers and the notion that she's figured out how to do merit pay for teachers so that it isn't 'stupid' like those other folks (was it the Liberals?)

I'm eager to see the details of her plan, where the devil is, you know. More early childhood education and a national curriculum are very seductive here in the US, too.

I like that she's delivering more technology, but she didn't say how much staff development money was being included (my particular area of interest of late.)

The fact that your experts in Australia (Gillard) sound a lot like our experts in the U.S.(Duncan)is both frightening and reassuring, at the same time. I do think that both of the above experts have a tendency to think that teachers aren't quite as important to education as I do. It seems like both of the experts are doing everything but giving more power and authority to those that are still actually and I do mean 'in the act of' teaching. Talking about it and doing it are two very different things.
